Message From Dermot

Welcome to our newsletter. The children are having lots of fun during Seachtain Na Gaeilge – Don’t forget this week we have Lá Glas on Wednesday, and every child can wear a green item of clothing to celebrate our national holiday. We also have a fundraiser that day – see below. Our core value is ‘citizenship’ this month. The school is enjoying the lifting of further restrictions which you can read about below. We had an assembly in the hall on Friday for the first time in 2 years, and we were treated to songs from Niamh’s, Orla M’s and Clíona’s classes and we had a fashion show from 6th class ‘as Gaeilge’. It was a hoot.

We continue to welcome student teachers to our school from DCU, Marino & Hibernia college. They will be supported by our staff on their placements. We would like to thank the students who also subbed for us over the last few months.

The Board of Management met last week and the agreed report can be found on the BoM webpage as always.

Supporting Children During a Time of War.

Talk and images of countries at war can be very upsetting for children and adults. We have been supporting discussions in the classroom at an age appropriate level following the out break of the war in Europe that started over the midterm break. We have been promoting feelings of belonging, safety, hope and calmness. Many educational groups and colleges have issued resources for teaching, and just this week, the Department of Education has issued guidelines for teachers and parents HERE.

CWETNS Fundraiser for Children Affected by Conflict

On Wednesday 16th, we are asking you to send donations with your child for Lá Glas. The children shall all be wearing green, and we will be assembling them in the yard, and taking an aerial photograph for ‘PEACE’. We will distribute this on our website and on social media, as a symbol of our community standing in solidarity with children who are suffering because of war. Please send €2 with your child, and if you can, a €5 note would be greatly appreciated and will save us dealing with a huge amount of coins. Donations will be made to UNICEF, who work with children in countries at war.

If any parent has access to a drone and is available on Wednesday, to take the picture, please contact me on [email protected].

The school will be considering more fundraising events to support the humanitarian crisis as it develops, and if anybody has thoughts or contributions on this please liaise with your parent rep, who will bring it to the parents association committee and it will be discussed there with the school. Thanks.

Transition to Secondary School

On Thursday 24th March, the Parents Association invite you to an information evening for 4th, 5th and 6th Class parents around the ‘Transition to Secondary School’ at 7.45pm.

This will take place over Zoom, the link will be shared closer to date by your class rep. It will run for approx. 1.5 hrs.

We Bought Books from Fundraising – THANKYOU !

Thank you so much to the Parents Association for their generous donation to purchasing beloved books for Canal Way. To date we have added to the class libraries in Fourth, Fifth and Sixth class.

We are looking forward to the satisfying crack of the book spine to be relished as we dive into a the shelves of books for groups reading, overflowing class libraries and sets of novels for the whole class to explore.

We have spent €3 K on these books to date with more on order.

Money raised from the online winter quiz will be paying for these .

The whole school will benefit from these books for years to come.

Extracurricular Activities Returning on Monday 21.03.2022

Enroll tonight at 6pm

We are delighted to announce that extracurricular activities are returning following lifting of restrictions. The management have decided to initially re-introduce activities that are run by staff only, as this is the easiest way to get them up and running as quickly as possible.

All of the activities are detailed on the extracurricular page on our website, LINK HERE so you can head over there and read about what is on offer, the cost, the times, the classes who can enrol etc.

Enrolment will be live on the After School Page from Monday 14th at 18:00hrs, at which point you will be able to email the teacher and express your interest in enrolling. The teacher will get back to you promptly. Extracurricular activities are not available for junior and senior infants.

Baking Camp (April holidays)

Milis Delish Baking Camp takes place from Monday 10th to Wednesday 13th April from 10am to 1pm daily. Fun baking class and you get to create your own personalised egg.

This class is run by a member of our community and promises to be mighty craic.

School Closures

St Patricks Day – school will be closed on March 17th & 18th and re-open on Monday 21st.

Spring break (end of term) – school will close at 12.00am on Friday 8th April and re-open on Monday 25th April.

Thank-you Carol, our former Chairperson of the CWETNS PAC

Thank-you to Carol, for serving as the chairperson on the Parents Association Committee since school year 2020 – from myself, the Board of Management, the Parents Association and Committee, the staff and children. Carol led the committee through the most difficult period of our school, just after the pandemic hit, and Carol nurtured creativity and initiative which resulted in exceptional fundraising events, at a time when we couldn’t leave our house. Carol worked tirelessly and with great dedication, giving generously of time and energy. We truly appreciate it Carol.

Templeogue / Synge Street Gaelic Football Dolphin Park

Football Academy for all children aged 4 – 7 yrs in Dolphin Park, every Saturday morning (11:30am) during school term. Each session lasts one-hour and comprises of a number of fun and interesting drills. Goals are simple – enjoyment, participation and basic skills.

CWETNS are linked with Templeogue Synge Street Coach Ken, who has been with us for the past few weeks coaching the Junior & Senior Infant classes. Feel free to contact Ken if you are interested in attending. [email protected]

Home Work Policy Review

We are currently in the process of reviewing our Homework Policy and are looking for your input. Please fill in the short survey below. We will use the results to help form our new policy and approach to homework in our school. The survey will be live until the 17th of March.

Canal Way’s Cumann na mBunscoil

CWETNS’s journey comes to an end this week after a hugely successful few weeks of training and matches. It was a special experience for the chidlren’s football teams as they travelled far and wide from Ballyfermot to Inchicore, on foot and by bus. With training every Monday after school, the children learned the skills of Gaelic football. Using their new skills of the hand pass, kick pass, the solo and the hop – the teams showed their ability and determination by excellent performances particularly by the girls away to St. Ultan’s NS in Ballyfermot and by the boys against a very strong Gaelscoil Insé Choir side in Memorial Park. The team and management had a blast, the huge numbers at training, the battles on the pitch, the incredible team spirit and not to forget the sing-songs on the bus!

Science Blast

5th Class have sent a project to Science Blast. The last time we had a project at Science Blast was just before the first lockdown in 2020, when we had a fantastic day out at the RDS. This time Science Blast is online but we do hope to show off our investigation “What is the best way for 5th Class to lift 1 litre of water?” at school in April. Watch this space!”

LEGO initiative
