We welcomed a special visitor to our school this month. Emer Nowlan, the CEO of Educate Together came to us, and enjoyed a tour, and a meet and greet with the children. Emer was extremely impressed by everything that has been accomplished in these ten years since 2013. Emer commented on how engaged the children were and the lovely inclusive atmosphere we have in Canal Way. Emer also noted improvements in the environment and was very complimentary about our establishment in the community.
We are noticing an increase in poor timekeeping in our school and we need this to be addressed. Teaching starts at 08.45am. Please arrive anytime between 08.30 & 08.45am. Your child must be in class for 08.45am or they will miss teaching time.
We have compiled an attendance information document explaining how we take the role, and manage attendance. It also explains who we report attendance to, and TUSLA referrals. You will find the document ON THIS LINK and also on ‘OurSchool/FAQ’s’ page.

County Photos will be taking photos on 08.03.2022
Your child will have their picture taken and there will be a class photo taken also. You will receive proof photographs afterwards, and all the details will be given as to how to buy. There is no obligation to buy photographs once they have been taken.
There was a demand for the class photos over the last few years, when we didn’t do this. So please, those who have raised this demand, please follow through and buy them.
Thanks to the money raised last school year by the Parents Association (2021/22), we have had our PE floor refurbished and marked up. The transformation is extremely impressive, and the children are delighted, as are the staff. It looks like a new hall.
Thankyou to our parents association for fundraising in the last school year and for enabling us to do this work. We really appreciate this.
The Weaving a Narrative project who kindly involved us in their IMMA collaboration, and which resulted in our children building our willow submarine in the garden – have made a video of our collaboration with them. It is wonderfully shot and produced, and you may well see your little one on the video. The music is quite something too – please watch this video. It is so Canal Way !
Life is returning to the garden and we have been hard at work.
Over the break we have had some trees removed as they were dead, and we also did a lot of cutting back. You will notice a lot more sky and light as you walk through and the street is cleared too. Thanks Wilma for minding the garden and organizing this .
We have frog spawn in the pond for the 7th year in a row – no-one to thank for this one except the frogs who were obviously very busy of late. Please see a video of the frog here and on our Gallery page.
This June we will have completed 10 years in education. It is hard to believe as the time seems to have flown and we have accomplished so much from the days of 38 children back in 2013, in the converted offices on Harcourt Terrace. It is a significant birthday for the school, as we are now fully established this year with 396 children enrolled. We intend to celebrate this birthday together and we will be arranging events together, happy celebrations and fun times.
As part of our preparations, we are working on a new logo for our school. You may have noticed our sign on the front of the building has nearly falling down at this stage, so we are taking the opportunity to re-design the logo. 2nd to 6th class will be helping us to do this – you will find worksheet in your child bag, and we ask that is returned by tomorrow.
Awesome Walls Climbing Centre are hosting their annual schools climbing competition this March. The competition is open to children from Junior Infants to 6th class. The cost is €25 per competitor. If you would be interested in your child taking part in the competition please let our teacher Amy C know before Monday – contact office ([email protected]) . We already have some children climbing for Canal Way in the event. Thanks families for your support.
We kindly ask that you consider the weather when clothing your children. We are not finished with the cold weather yet, and the school is sadly not an A-rated building, and can be cool on occasion. The children need to be warm and comfortable in the class to learn, and appropriate clothing for weather is essential for that.
